July 2012

I love weather, meteorologically speaking.  Satellite images, hurricane reports, snow accumulations.  I find looping radar scans more entertaining than most TV shows.

However, I find I’m losing that loving feeling.  Maybe it’s just my general state of being these days, but I’m afraid it’s much more.  I enjoyed our early springtime temperatures, though they made me a bit uneasy. Everything was thrown off schedule early on and we never experienced “normal”. The perennials have not bloomed as they should, the vegetables are under-producing, and the weeds are out of control.

And the rain!  I swear it’s rained every day for the last 2 months.  Not good drenching rains, but pounding storms that left my plants broken and my back yard a sloppy, muddy mess.  I can’t believe I’m actually saying this, but I’m almost looking forward to winter just to have a good dry out.

No, weather has not been my friend this year. It might be time to find another hobby.

As with every other month this year, we were well above normal: 6+ highs and 3+ lows.  I’d bet we’d have been even higher had we not had so much rain.  I’m not interested in joining the global warming debate, as there are too many unknowns at play and to argue them is pointless.  However, I do believe in the cyclical nature of nature and that warming spells such as our current one are natural.  I suspect that in a few thousand years, these temps will peak and then start to decline.  Call me crazy, but I’m really not concerned about temperature fluctuations in 3012.  I’d just like to know if I need to start saving for an air conditioning unit now, or if I can put it off for another decade.

  1. I’m learning to concede winless fights. I do believe something is afoot, but I don’t care to add to the drama surrounding this debate. Regardless of what’s really going on, there’s nothing I can do but watch and react accordingly…and remain mellow.
